Greetings!
I’m Becky Rhoades, and I manage co-curricular programming here at Pitt Business. What is co-curricular programming? Well, in a nutshell, co-curricular programming is supplemental professional development. Students at Pitt Business are unique in many ways. I have worked at a handful of higher education institutions, and I can honestly say Pitt Business students are a group all their own. One thing that stands out the most is their drive and ambition to never stay comfortable. Some would say… they are focused on their professional development!
Before I dive in and tell you all what co-curricular programming looks like and what we offer, let’s explain professional development a little. I decided to ask some of my colleagues how they would define professional development. Here are some of the answers—
“Involves not only growing and succeeding academically or career-wise, but also growing and feeling fulfilled in your personal life. In order to grow and be successful at school and work, you need to ensure you are feeling healthy and fulfilled outside of those two areas”
“Learning and practicing skills and behaviors that are critical to success in the working world”
“Training and experiences to help you grow and stand out amongst others to be successful in whatever that looks like to you”
Are you seeing some common themes? Success and growth are the two that stand out to me! So, before I get ahead of myself, spoiler alert- Professional Development can mean whatever YOU want it to mean to feel successful! If growth and a FEELING of success is taking place, you are experiencing a level of professional development.
So how do we support professional development here at Pitt Business? Too many ways to count! But let’s reel back to co-curricular programming for starters. A student can easily spend four years in school, going to classes, getting good grades, yadda, yadda, yadda.
How do you stand out though?? What makes you different from your classmates? That is where I come in (with the help of the awesome Career Development team obviously)!
